VACANCIES FALL AGAIN, BUT RELIABLE TEMPORARY COVER STILL HAS TO BE READY
Vacancies fall again, but reliable temporary cover still has to be ready
ONS vacancy data for May to July 2026 shows fewer advertised vacancies, with the smallest employers seeing the largest quarterly fall.
Why this matters now
The useful move is to treat the news as an operating signal, not background noise. It points to a decision that has to be made cleanly: who is responsible, what record exists, what route is being used, what deadline applies and what happens if the file is challenged.
What the source says
- Early ONS estimates suggest vacancies decreased by 6,000, or 0.8%, to 707,000 in May to July 2026.
- Vacancies decreased in 9 of 18 industry sectors on the quarter.
- The largest quarterly decreases were in human health and social work and education.
- Vacancies decreased in 3 of 5 employment size bands, with the largest fall among businesses with 1 to 9 employees.
What this means in practice
A lower vacancy count does not remove the need for people. It usually means employers are slower to commit. That makes planned temporary cover more valuable: sickness, peaks, backlogs, warehouse pressure, admin gaps and cautious growth still need a clean staffing answer.
The practical action is simple: check the evidence before the pressure arrives. Do not wait until a client complains, HMRC asks, a worker queries pay, a supplier fails or a manager discovers that the cover plan only existed in someone’s head. A clean decision has a record behind it. A risky decision usually has a vague explanation and no owner.

For directors, finance teams, hiring managers and operations leads, the question is not whether the headline is interesting. The question is whether your current process would stand up if someone asked for proof tomorrow. If the answer is “probably”, that is not a control. That is a guess.
