The government has announced a new 3,000 Youth Jobs Grant for employers who take on young people who have been out of work for six months or more. The scheme, an expansion of the existing Youth Guarantee, was confirmed by Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden on 16 March 2026 and forms part of a wider 2.5 billion package aimed at tackling rising youth unemployment.

The numbers behind the announcement are stark. Between October and December 2025, nearly 957,000 young people in the UK were classified as NEET not in education, employment or training up from 946,000 the previous quarter. The government's ambition is to bring 200,000 more people into work over the next three years through the new grant and extended eligibility under the Youth Guarantee Scheme, which will now cover young people up to the age of 24.

For businesses, the financial incentive is significant. Alongside the 3,000 hiring grant, small and medium-sized employers will receive 2,000 for every new apprentice they take on under reforms to the Growth and Skills Levy. Phase one of the scheme launches in April across six regions, including Greater Manchester, Birmingham and the East Midlands.

Neil Carberry, Chief Executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, welcomed the package, describing it as a "sensible set of measures" while urging the government to go further in reducing the overall employment cost burden on businesses.

For employers in sectors like construction, commercial, and industrial where V3 Recruitment places workers every day this grant represents a real opportunity. Hiring young talent that might otherwise be overlooked now comes with direct financial support. The key will be making sure those placements lead to stable, quality roles rather than short-term fixes.
